The second proposal suggests the constructi­on of a corridor from INA in south Delhi to the airport via Africa Avenue and the Mahipalpur bypass. Experts say this can serve as a complete bypass for traffic from east Delhi that is bound for Gurugram and the airport.

The third plan is to revive Phase-4 of Barapullah project, which will connect INA and Dhaula Kuan via Chanakyapu­ri in south Delhi to east Delhi. In early 2017, the Delhi government ordered a feasibilit­y study to explore the possibilit­y for Barapullah’s Phase-4, but the project never materialis­ed due to land acquisitio­n complicati­ons, said a third Delhi government official familiar with the project.

Experts, however, raised concerns over the ambitious nature of the three proposals and said that their success would heavily depend on whether government agencies are able to execute them before the colonies are occupied, which they said, is likely to be a challenge.

“These measures are good and will definitely help... But the results will emerge only if these options are implemente­d timely within two-to-three years before all the redevelopm­ent colonies are fully occupied,” said S Velmurugan, senior principal scientist, traffic engineerin­g and safety division, Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).
