NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Sunday fined a resident ₹50,000 for littering a public place with use of thermocol plates in a bhandara (community lunch). This was in Chirag Dilli area, officials said.

The fine was, however, not for use of single-use plastic in the form of thermocol plates and plastic cups. As of now, no ban on such synthetic items exists in the city. It was only for littering, SDMC officials said.

“He was fined for encroaching on public place (the road) under Section 317 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, not having a suitable waste collection system while holding a bhandara for more than 100 persons and littering (section 351 of the DMC Act),” senior officers said.

The field staff found that the organisers had “not taken proper measures to collect and dispose used plates but littered the nearby ground,” a statement released by the civic body said, according to PTI.

“Under ‘Swachhta hi Sewa’ campaign, instructions have been issued to the field staff to be vigilant and take appropriate action against the violators as per the law,” a senior official said During the campaign, the SDMC is regularly making allout efforts to educate and make people aware and sensitise them about the harmful effects of single-use plastic, a senior official told PTI.
