New Cong chief vows ‘return to glory days’
NEW DELHI: Strengthening the foundation of the party and reaching out to voters by publicising past work will be the strategy of the Congress party in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. Newly appointed Delhi Congress president Subhash Chopra said his aim as chief will be to keep the party together and fight for an improved standard of living for the people of Delhi.
Speaking to HT on Thursday, a day after his appointment, Chopra said it was under the Congress regime that Delhi witnessed maximum development. His focus, he said, would be to bring the party back to its former glory in the national capital.
“We need to revive the party in Delhi and are determined to do that. People know that we did a lot of work when we were in power. The flyovers, public buses and privatisation of power that actually brought electricity to many households, everything was done by the Congress,” Chopra said.
Chopra is also relying on his experience of holding the post of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief in 1999. Cricketerturned-politician Kirti Azad, who was appointed the campaign head for the upcoming polls, said he was all set to lead the party “to victory”. He said he has some “innovative ideas” and he will have discussion meetings with Chopra and the rest of the senior leaders in the party in the coming days before a comprehensive election strategy is chalked out.
“I do have some plans, which I will discuss with party leaders in the coming days,” Azad said.
