SARITA DEVI ELECTED TO AIBA ATHLETES COMMISSION

NEWDELHI: Veteran Indian boxer L Sarita Devi has been elected unopposed to the Internatio­nal Boxing Asociation’s (AIBA) firstever athletes commission to represent the Asian bloc. Sarita was in the running for the position as the sole candidate from the region. The commission features one male and a female boxer from each of the five regional confederat­ions (Asia, Oceania, Europe, Americas, and Europe).

The 37-year-old is an eighttime Asian Championsh­ips medallist — five of them gold .

ASIAN YOUTH BOXING ULAANBAATA­R: Seven Indian boxers —two men and five women —advanced to the finals of the Asian Youth Championsh­ips on Saturday. Among the men, Selay Soy (49kg) and Ankit Narwal (60kg) made the summit clashes, while Naorem Chanu (51kg), Vinka (64kg) Sanamacha Chanu (75kg), Poonam (54kg) and Sushma (81kg) made the finals.

Settling for bronze were Arundhati Choudhury (69kg), Komalpreet Kaur (+81kg) and Jaismine (57kg) in the women’s draw. Satender Singh (91kg) and Aman (+91kg) fetched third place finishes for India in the men’s competitio­n.

SHUBHANKAR TIED-56 JOHANNESBU­RG: Shubhankar Sharma carded six-over 78 in the third round to be tied-56 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge on Saturday. He is 17 strokes behind leader Zander Lombard. A poor finish here will dash the Indian golfer’s chances to make it to the DP World Tour Championsh­ip, the European Tour’s seasonende­r, in Dubai.

BEST-EVER MEDAL HAUL DUBAI: India signed off the campaign at the World Para Athletics Championsh­ip with their biggest ever haul —nine medals —finishing in 24th position. India won two gold, two silver and five bronze, securing 13 qualifying spots at the Tokyo Games.
