nBENGALURU: A sedition case has been registered against a school in Bidar district of Karnataka after a purported video clip of its students staging a play opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act during the annual day celebrations went viral.

The video of the play by students of Shaheen School in Bidar was posted by Mohammed Yusuf Raheem on January 21.

The case was registered on the complaint from social worker Neelesh Rakshyal on January 26. The complainant has alleged that the school authorities ‘used’ the students to perform a drama on January 21, where they “abused” Modi for introducing the CAA and the National Register of Citizens.

The management tried to create ‘fear’ among the Muslims, news agency PTI quoted Rakshyal as saying.

The school management has been booked under sections 504, 505(2), 124(A), 153(A) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

A police officer, who did not wish to be named, said they are talking to students and staff to find out who wrote the script of the play. “It is unlikely that a nine year old child will say such things without being taught,” he said.

Speaking to HT, the CEO of Shaheen Group of Institutions, Thouseef Madikeri, said, “We are a reputed chain of institutions... We have a branch in Delhi near Jamia Millia Islamia as well. Yes, the students at our Bidar school staged a play on the protests against CAA, NRC and NPR. In that, a fourth standard girl inadvertently mouthed dialogues which were not part of the script but which were being commonly said on the streets. One has to realise that things spoken in Deccani style might have been misunderstood. The parents of the girl have already apologized but police are harassing management, staff and students.”

BJP leader and district in charge minister Prabhu Chauhan condemned the remarks made against the PM. “They have insulted the PM who has been elected by the people and thus it is an insult to the country,” he said.
