Three-day festival starts to mark one year of south Delhi’s unique Waste to Wonder park
nNEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Friday kicked-off a three-day long cultural festival at its Waste to Wonder Park in Sarai Kale Khan, on the occasion of the park’s first anniversary.
The theme park, which features a 60-feet Eiffel Tower, a 20-feet Taj Mahal and replicas of five other wonders of the world that have been built using 150 tonnes of industrial and other waste. It was inaugurated by Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Friday.
The park, since its inauguration last year, has been drawing major crowds with more than 15.5 lakh visitors having visited it. The park, which has a paid entry, has recovered the ₹8 crore money spent on building it, SDMC officers said.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor, Anil Baijal, inaugurated the festival at the park on Friday in the presence of South Delhi Mayor Sunita Kangra, commissioner Gyanesh Bharti and chairman of standing committee Bhupender Gupta.
Renowned ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas gave a musical rendition here, with officials saying that performances by renowned musical bands, comedy shows, magic shows, puppet shows, sound and light shows had been lined up for Saturday and Sunday.
L-G Baijal said, “SDMC has developed splendid parks like Waste to Wonder, Nandan Van and Woodland Amusement Park. A Bharat Darshan Park in Punjabi Bagh is also being created. This is a good example of the waste to wealth concept.”
SDMC commissioner, Gyanesh Bharti said, “It is a matter of pride for us to organise this festival.” Mayor Sunita Kangra said, “All members of the public are invited to this event.”
