Two women commit suicide after rape

RAIPUR: Two sisters allegedly committed suicide in Dhamtari district of Chhattisga­rh after one of them was allegedly raped by their relative, police said on Saturday. The accused has since been arrested.

“The women, both in their twenties, were found hanging from a tree in Dahi village of Dhamtari district on Friday. Police rushed to the spot, sent the bodies for postmortem and started investigat­ion,” Dhamtari additional superinten­dent of police Manisha Thakur said.

A purported suicide note was also found in the house of the women, the ASP said.

“The suicide note, written by the younger sister, was found from their house. The woman has alleged that her distant maternal uncle sexually exploited her and hence she was taking the extreme step,” the ASP said.

The accused was arrested on Saturday evening and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“We are still investigat­ing why the other girl committed suicide and are interrogat­ing the accused,” said the ASP.

TEEN RAPED BY TWO IN UP’S MAHOBA

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two men in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Saturday. The incident took place on Thursday but the case was reported in Mataundh police station of Banda district by the girl’s family only on Friday.

The accused are said to be absconding, an official said. The official said the victim’s family members brought her to Mataundh police station.
