1,971 new cases take Tamil Nadu tally close to 45k, death toll at 435

CHENNAI: As many as 1,974 people tested positive for the virus on Sunday, as per the daily bulletin of the state health department.

With the addition of Sunday’s cases, the total number of those affected by the disease in the state stood at 44,661.

Thirty eight more people succumbed to the coronaviru­s disease in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, pushing the number of deaths to 435 in the state, according to the state health department.

With a significan­t number of deceased so far having suffered from comorbidit­ies, the government urged those with issues like diabetes and blood pressure to keep them under control by following the prescribed medication properly.

“We are repeatedly insisting-comorbidit­y, especially for the aged... please keep diabetes under control,” said C Vijayabask­ar, the health minister

The number of recoveries on Sunday stood at 1,138, taking the cumulative tally of those who have recovered in the state to 24,547, so far.

The number of active cases, including those remaining in isolation, was at 19,676, according to the bulletin.

Chennai continued to record a high number of Covid-19 cases, as it accounted for 1,415 of the 1,974 cases that were reported on Sunday. The state capital is closely followed by neighbouri­ng Chengalpet district, where 178 people were affected, according to the Sunday bulletin.
