Trump tweet flagged, FB ad removed
WASHINGTON: Twitter added a “manipulated media” label on a video posted on US President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed on Thursday, the same day advertisements by his re-election campaign was removed by Facebook for using Nazi symbols.
The original video on Twitter, which went viral on social media in 2019, showed a black toddler and a white toddler running towards each other and hugging.
The clip shared in Trump’s tweet first shows the part where one of those toddlers is seen running ahead of the other. At one point the banner reads: “Racist baby probably a Trump voter”.
The tweeted video, with more than 7.7 million views and 125,000 retweets, then goes on to show the original video and concludes : “America is not the problem. Fake news is.” Twitter said:“we may label Tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context.”
This came as Facebook removed campaign ads by Trump that featured an upside-down red triangle, a symbol once used by Nazis to designate political prisoners, communists and others in concentration camps. The company said that the ads violated “our policy against organised hate.” Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said the inverted red triangle was a symbol commonly used by Antifa so it was included in an ad about Antifa.
GENEVA: The UN’S top human rights body on Friday condemned discriminatory police brutality and demanded a report on “systemic racism”, but rights groups accused Washington of wielding pressure to strip out any mention of the United States in the resolution.
The resolution was watered down in recent days, first to remove the call for an international probe, and finally to strip away any mention of the US.
