Fulham silence Mourinho with late equaliser

- Sportdesk@hindustantimes.com

Jose Mourinho slammed Tottenham’s “avoidable” mistakes and lack of killer instinct after Fulham’s Ivan Cavaleiro rescued a 1-1 draw on Wednesday. Harry Kane had put the hosts ahead in the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but Cavaleiro struck in the closing stages to leave Mourinho frustrated.

Tottenham have won just two of their last eight league matches and sit in sixth place. A win against Fulham would have taken them into third place above Manchester City, who made it four successive league victories when Phil Foden earned a 1-0 win over Brighton earlier on Wednesday. Whether Spurs—six points behind leaders Manchester United—will be regarded as title contenders for much longer must be in doubt after this sloppy display. “Once more we concede a goal that is completely avoidable. You have to keep a clean sheet, not make mistakes. The markers are there. There wasn’t even an advantage in terms of numbers,” Mourinho said.

LONDON: Barca in Super Cup final CORDOBA:

Barcelona booked their place in the final of the Spanish Super Cup after overcoming the absence of injured Lionel Messi to beat Real Sociedad 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time on Wednesday. Barca midfielder Riqui Puig kept his cool to deceive keeper Alex Remiro and score the decisive fifth penalty sending the Catalans into Sunday’s final in Seville, after teammates Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong had squandered their spot-kicks.

Holders Real Madrid meet Athletic Bilbao on Thursday in the other semi-final.

Bayern knocked out KIEL:

Holders Bayern Munich twice gave up a one-goal lead before crashing out of the German Cup 6-5 on penalties to second tier Holstein Kiel on Wednesday following a 2-2 draw after extra time in the second-round match. Both sides converted all five spot-kicks before Bayern’s Marc Roca had his effort saved and Fin Bartels slotted in the winning penalty.
