NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old woman pregnant with twins was shot dead, allegedly by her husband, outside her home in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin on Tuesday morning, just three days after she was released from jail in a drugs case.

The accused also allegedly shot the victim’s friend, who tried to intervene; the latter is likely to survive, police said. Purported footage from a CCTV camera showed the alleged killer taking his time to go about the shootings.

Police said the accused had recently started a relationship with another woman, which resulted in frequent quarrels between the married couple.

RP Meena, deputy commissioner of police (southeast), identified the victim as Saina, who was earlier booked in a case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic

Substances (NDPS) Act, and was jailed a few months ago. She was released on bail on Saturday on the grounds that she was eight months pregnant with twins.

According to the DCP, Saina was earlier married to an alleged gangster who is in jail after being booked under MCOCA and the NDPS Act. About a year ago, Saina married the accused, Wasim, a 32-year-old money lender.

When Saina was sent to jail a few months ago, police said that Waseem entered into a relationship with another woman, assuming that his wife will not be released for a long time.

“When Saina was released on bail, Waseem did not meet her, and that led to frequent quarrels between the married couple over the last three days,” the DCP said.

The purported CCTV footage showed that, a little before 10.30am on Tuesday, Waseem was talking to Saina, who was sitting on a chair outside their house in Nizamuddin when he allegedly pulled out a gun.

When Saina’s friend, Shahdat — a man in his 20s — tried to intervene, Waseem allegedly shot him as well, causing him to immediately collapse on the ground. The DCP said that Saina was hit four times, and Shahdat once.

The accused was also purportedly seen pointing his gun at locals, and warning them against interfering.

Sania and Shahdat were later rushed to the hospital, where Saina was declared dead on arrival.

The DCP said that police questioned Waseem’s family, forcing him to surrender soon after the crime.

Investigators suspect it was a “pre-emptive strike” by Waseem, who believed that Saina would get him eliminated for allegedly cheating on her.
