Lockdown in Gurugram this weekend as infections spiral

- Kartik Kumar kartik.kumar@htlive.com

In an effort to control the Covid-19 surge in the region, the Haryana government on Friday announced a lockdown this weekend in Gurugram and eight other districts in the state till 5am on Monday.

The lockdown will see stringent curbs on movement of people with exceptions for those involved in essential services and those who have e-passes and prior permissions for certain events. The last time the district saw such stringent measures was during the 68-day nationwide lockdown.

The state government was reluctant to impose a lockdown, preferring to reinforce measures such as social distancing and

wearing of masks. On April 23, it decided against a recommendation from the chief secretary for a lockdown. It did, however, impose a night curfew between 10pm and 5am from April 13.

On Thursday, Haryana recorded 13,947 more cases, of which 5,042 were in Gurugram.

The lockdown will be imposed in Faridabad, Panchkula, Sonepat, Rohtak, Karnal, Hisar, Sirsa and Fatehabad.

Haryana chief secretary Vijay Vardhan ordered the lockdown under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The order says the general public is not allowed to leave their homes during the curbs.

Delivery of all essential goods such as medicines, daily needs from e-commerce platforms; home delivery from eateries and restaurants; passengers travelling through flights, buses, trains; petrol pump; delivery of LPG cylinders; movement of interstate and intrastate essential and non-essential goods; movement of those engaged in telecommunication, internet services are among the key things that are permitted.

All weddings, organisers of which have taken permission from the district magistrates or authorised officers, will be permitted with a limit of 30 people in indoor spaces and 50 in outdoor spaces. Gurugram deputy commissioner Yash Garg also issued an order on Friday, stating that all permissions for weddings and events procured from the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) office and falling under containment zones stand null.
