DEVELOP DELHI LIKE SINGAPORE FOR LEGAL TOURISM, SAYS EX-SC JUDGE

- Abraham Thomas

NEW DELHI: Create the right ecosystem to develop Delhi as a model like Singapore for legal tourism, said former Supreme Court judge Arjan Kumar Sikri at an arbitration conclave held in the Capital on Saturday.

Participating in the “Arbitrate in India Conclave 2022”, justice Sikri said, “Why not develop Delhi as a model like Singapore and have legal tourism...the question is whether we will be able to create a kind of an environment to nurture legal tourism. As of now, many countries have been able to achieve it and Singapore is one of the examples if we talk in the context of Asia.”

The main requirement, the former judge said, is to create a kind of an environment in India which is Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) -friendly.

ADR involves cost-friendly and speedy method to resolve disputes. “This also involves creating an environment where the stakeholders are comfortable to get their issues resolved in India,” the judge said, while addressing the event organised by the Indian Dispute Resolution Centre, coinciding with their second year since establishment. ASG Balbir Singh who was part also of the panel said, government has prioritised conflict resolution. He said, “If India wants to achieve $ 5 trillion economy, the resolution of disputes in India at any level is a primary objective which is going to contribute to this and the government is conscious of that.” The other panel members were advocate Tejas Karia and Vanita Bhargava. from the Kashmir valley to safer places after the killing of Bhat in Chadoora on May 12. Scores of pandits protested in Srinagar and the southern district of Anantnag.

Hundreds of Kashmiri Pandit employees deputed in the Valley under the Prime Minister’s package for the rehabilitation of the community in 2008 have been boycotting work and holding sit-in protests across Kashmir.

On May 13, special police officer Riyaz Ahmad Thoker was shot dead in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Ranjit Singh, 52, who was also from Jammu, was killed in a grenade attack inside a wine shop in Baramulla on May 17.

Politicians and officials condemned Tuesday’s killing in strong terms. Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha vowed an “unforgettable response”.

“Terrorist attack on a school teacher, Rajni Bala is the most reprehensible act. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” Sinha said in a tweet. “Terrorists and their sympathizers will be given unforgettable response for the dastardly attack.”

Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples Democratic Party condemned the killing and criticised the central government over “fake claims” on Kashmir being normal.

It was obvious that targeted civilian killings are on the rise, which is a deep cause of concern, she said. This “act of cowardice” sadly plays “into the vicious anti-muslim narrative spun” by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mufti said.

“This is yet another targeted killing in a long list of recent attacks directed at unarmed civilians,” former chief minister Omar Abdullah of the National Conference said on Twitter. “Words of condemnation & condolence ring hollow as do the assurances of the government that they will not rest till situation normalises. May the deceased rest in peace.”

the needy,” said Modi.

After coming to power, the BJP government pruned 90 million fake names from the list of beneficiaries of various schemes. “Be it Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or scholarship or any other scheme, we have eradicated the scope of corruption through direct transfer of benefits. We have transferred over ₹22 lakh crore to the bank accounts of beneficiaries of various schemes through direct benefit transfer,” the Prime Minister said.

Now the government is not the master, but the servant of the masses, the PM said.

The BJP government is working to build a new India, he said. “We are trying to give a permanent solution to the problems which earlier were considered permanent.”

Before 2014, the national security was a major concern, he said. “Now our borders are more secure than they were before 2014,” the PM said.

Highlighting his government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, the PM said nearly 2 billion vaccines against the virus have been administered in the country so far.

“India exported Covid vaccines to various countries and Himachal Pradesh’s Baddi industrial unit played a vital role in manufacturing those jabs… Now India extends a hand of friendship not under compulsion but to help others as was done by providing Covid vaccines to several countries,” he said. The state will elect a new assembly later this year.

Following his arrival at the Mall Road in the Himachal Pradesh capital, Modi, accompanied by chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, walked to the venue of the rally i n Ridge Maidan around 11.30pm. Union minister Anurag Thakur, state minister Suresh Bhardwaj, state BJP chief and Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap were also present at the rally.

There the Prime Minister interacted with the beneficiaries of the Central schemes from across the country.

In a discussion with a beneficiary f r o m B i h a r , Mo d i expressed satisfaction over the rural housing scheme PM-AWAS and said those who had not yet been covered under the scheme would be reached in “two to fourths months”.

Earlier, the Prime Minister also held a roadshow from Central Telegraph Office to the Rani Jhansi Park at the Mall road.
