NEW DELHI: A day after a video went viral showing a speeding SUV deliberately hitting a man on a bike in south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri area, the police registered a case and arrested a 25-year-old final-year law student in connection with the case, the police said on Monday.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (south) Harsha Vardhan said the victim has been identified as Shreyansh (who goes by a single name), a resident of east Delhi and a firstyear law student. The accused has been identified as Anuj Choudhary, resident of Neb Sarai’s Anupam Garden area.

Both are students of different colleges. The police did not share the name of the institutions.

Police said that on June 5, the police control room received a call 7:21am informing that a car driver has hit a biker near Arjan Garh Metro station. When the police reached the spot, they found a damaged bike and were informed that the victim, Shreyansh, has been taken to a hospital for treatment.

“The injured person did not give a statement at that time since he was under treatment.

Subsequently, a video of the incident emerged on social media and the complainant was asked to record his statement at the earliest,” the additional DCP said.

Shreyansh told police that he and some of his friends went to a temple in the Aravallis and were returning home on Sunday morning on their motorcycles .

“On the way, he had an argument with a driver of a SUV as the latter was driving rashly and speeding. He told the driver to drive safely and but the driver instead told him to not act like a ‘social worker’ and threatened the biker with dire consequences,” Vardhan said. He added that the car driver also had an argument with some other bikers that was captured on camera by a Youtuber who was part of the bike group.

Shreyansh then sped ahead but the accused driver followed him and hit him from behind and fled, the video posted on Twitter shows. Shreyash was thrown off the bike due to the impact of the hit and was taken to a hospital by his friends.

Police said that a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the driver of the car. “Based on the registration details, the car owner was traced to Anupam Garden area of Neb Sarai. Investigation revealed that the vehicle was being driven by the son of the owner. But neither the accused, nor the car was found at home. Based on human and technical intelligence, Chaudhary was arrested and the vehicle was also seized,” the additional DCP said.
