NEW DELHI: Police on Friday detained a 17-year-old minor for allegedly stabbing an elderly man to death when the latter was on morning walk near his residence in Shahdara’s Vishwas Nagar on Thursday, said officials. Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundaram said the 73-year-old injured victim — identified as Horam (goes by first name) — was spotted lying unconscious in a pool of blood by some passersby outside a milk shop in the area around 6am on Thursday.

The owner of the milk shop, Bhupendra (32), said he usually opens the shop around 4am, but he was late to open the shop on Thursday as the milk supplying truck came late. “...On Thursday morning, I saw a man lying unconscious near my shop. Initially, I thought a drunkard was sleeping there, but as I approached the man, I noticed he was injured and had stab injuries in his body. I immediately approached the local residents, who identified the injured man and informed police and his family,” Bhupendra said.

The victim had an injury in the abdomen as well as his nose was bleeding. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

The victim’s son, Vijay Pal, told police that his father went for a morning walk around 4am5am every day, and on Thursday also, he left home around 4am. Two hours later, they were informed about the incident, the officer said. Based on Pal’s complaint, an FIR was registered under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code at Frash Bazar police station on Thursday.

“We analysed CCTV footage of the area, and spotted a youth escaping the spot around the time of the incident. We traced and detained him from Delhi on Friday,” he said. The minor revealed during interrogation that “he was allegedly in an inebriated state when ‘Horam allegedly abused him for no reason’ on Thursday morning, following which he lost his temper and stabbed him”.
