CREMATION OF PET DOGS WILL BE DONE AT ANIMAL INCINERATORS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL CHARGE

PRAYAGRAJ: Prayagraj Nagar Nigam has come forward to share the grief of pet parents. The furry companions who are treated as family members and leave a trail of sorrow after they die, will now get a respectful final farewell as well.

Often, families and individuals who keep dogs as pets, are forced to abandon the bodies of the animals after death at deserted spots and sometimes even in garbage dumps. But the pet owners need not worry about conducting the last rites of their pet dogs as the nagar nigam will do the needful. The facility, however, is available only for the pet dogs registered with the veterinary department of the nagar nigam.

The cremation of the registered pets will be done at animal incinerator centres outside the city.

With this new initiative, the dog owners will have to inform the Nagar Nigam after the animal’s death following which a team will collect its body and will cremate it outside the city. No additional cost will be charged from dog owners for the cremation as registration fee has already been deposited, NN officials said.

In a bid to promote the registration of pets, nagar nigam had recently also organised a pet show and will soon launch a drive to encourage people to get their dogs and cats registered.

Nagar Nigam will also carry out a survey to learn the exact number of pet dogs in the city.

Nagar Nigam officials said the number of pet dogs that are registered is 805. However, their exact numbers in the city may be far more than that. The registration fee for a pet dog is Rs 700 while Rs 600 is charged for renewal of licence.

Moreover, after registration, the veterinary department team will monitor if the dog is being properly vaccinated and will give tips to owners regarding their diet and health.

Chief Veterinary officer at Nagar Nigam Dr Vijay Amrit Raj said number of pet dogs is increasing in the city but their owners are not coming forward for their registration. A survey will be carried out and dog owners will be encouraged to get their pet dogs registered.

“Nagar nigam has two animal incinerator centres at Rasulpur Mariadih and other at Baswar where bodies of pet dogs will be given proper cremation,” he said.

The nagar nigam has already started the cremation and has recently cremated bodies of some pet dogs after receiving calls from their owners, he added.
