HALDWANI: The student union members of Lal Bahadur Shastri government college in Nainital district threatened to immolated themselves on Monday over examinations being conducted without completing the syllabus, according to people familiar with the matter.

They said that the student union members under the leadership of college student union vice president Sachin Phulara, had climbed the roof of the college, in Halduchaur town, with bottles filled with petrol and raised slogans against the college administration.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the police force from Lalkuan police station reached the college to convince students to come down from the roof.

Phulara said, “The syllabus in various subjects has not been completed in the college. There is resentment among the students regarding this. Apart from this, the examination forms of dozens of students have not been filled. For past several years, the classes have been running in only 15 rooms in the campus. Students have been demanding to increase the facilities for years. The state government and local MLAs are ignoring this college.”

The students demanded the college administration to give a written assurance that the examinations would be conducted only after the completion of the syllabus. Lal Bahadur Shastri government college principal Anju Aggarwal said, “The datesheet of the examinations is decided by the Kumaon university. We have explained to the students that talks will be held with the university on this matter. We have also asked the students to take up this issue at their level with the university.”

UPON RECEIVING INFORMATION ABOUT THE INCIDENT, THE POLICE FROM LALKUAN POLICE STATION REACHED THE COLLEGE TO CONVINCE STUDENTS TO COME DOWN FROM THE ROOF.
