BS-IV norms are the successor to BS-III norms and they have more stringent standards. They were introduced in some parts of the country in 2010. They are set to be rolled out on April 1.

Bharat Stage-III norms are third generation vehicular emission norms introduced in 2005 in major cities and then nationwide in 2010.
What is EPCA’s stand? It wants the sale of BS-III vehicles stopped starting April 1.
What is the Center’s stand? The Centre clarified its order only bans the manufacturing of BS-III vehicles and not its sale.
What do automakers say? The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers argues that it should be allowed to sell its unsold inventory of BS-III vehicles even after the transition. As on March 20, there were 8.24 lakh unsold vehicles.
