Teaching is a specialised field

The teaching profession is a highly specialized field, and requires comprehensive training to gain expertise in the field. To become a good lecturer, one should have sound knowledge of your subject as well as solid teaching techniques.
For college and university teaching, after finishing a Master’s in a subject, one can become a specialist by completing an MPhil or a PhD. To be eligible to be a lecturer, one should hold at least a Master’s degree in any of the relevant subject with at least 55% marks in it, although higher qualifications are always preferred. You are also required to haveclearedthe NationalEligibility Test conducted by the Uni- versity Grants Commission (UGC).
The prerequisite to appear for this test is a post-graduate degree in your subject with a minimum of 55% for general and 50% for SC/ST.
This test is conducted by the UGC twice a year usually in the months of June and December and is conducted in humanities (including languages), social sciences, forensic science, environmental sciences, computer science and applications and electronic science.
After passing the UGC-NET exam you will be eligible to apply as a lecturer in any college affiliated with any of the universities recognised by UGC in India.
However, clearing of UGCNET does not guarantee you a job it is a pre-condition for eligibility for assistant professorship. Some universities accept a PhD qualification directly for post of lecturer. You must apply individually against the post advertised by various colleges from time to time.
