The idea is to mobilise food from a place where it’s going to be thrown away, and give it to people who would sleep empty stomach SWASTI SARAOUGHI, VOLUNTEER AT GURGAON’S ROBIN HOOD ARMY

Restaurants in DelhiNCR are known for their great food and nightlife, but they have a philanthropic side, too, with some organising special drives for the underprivileged.

If you land at Gurgaon’s Warehouse Cafe on a Sunday noon and see a group enjoying their meal enthusiastically, know that the place is organising a Social Sunday.

“Every fortnight, from 12pm onwards, we invite people from different backgrounds to enjoy our scrumptious food, and also provide them a dose of entertainment,” says, Anshul Aggarwal, owner of the cafe that has organised three successful Social Sundays with NGOs Samarth, Eklavya and Gaurav. “We have also set up a drop box where people can donate clothes and books for the underprivileged. Hope we inspire others, too,” adds Aggarwal.

Di Ghent Cafe, Gurgaon has been donating around 400 plates of food every month to the underprivileged children in Gurgaon. Anita from the cafe, says, “FeedOn is an organisation run by a handful of children in Gurgaon, to feed the needy. Our cafe joined them, and now we source food to feed the needy. Our staff also volunteers.”

Happiness equals full stomachs for Cafe Yell, situated in Delhi’s Defence Colony. “We organise a bhandara (feast for all) in the lane behind our restaurant, once every month. We also supply fresh food to an NGO, Feeding India, which then supplies food to the underprivileged,” says Vipul Gupta, owner.

Swasti Saraoughi, a volunteer at Gurgaon’s Robin Hood Army, says, “In Gurgaon, we have about 19 restaurants, including Kebab Express, Biryani Blues, Chef Style and Tossin Pizza, which regularly give us food.”
