Sculpting stones into pieces of art

Since time immemorial sculptures have defined and beautified India’s art scene. In the hands of Udaipurbased young artist, Amit Singh, stones take inspiration from nature to be carved into forms that appeal to the eyes. In the ongoing exhibition, Rhythm of Nature, the marble sculptor Singh carries his father’s legacy forward by creating spectacular sculptures. “I continue to compose different forms from stones and marble that are gifts to us from nature, and as a contribution from me I return it to nature with a humane touch,” says Singh. The works on display depict different elements of nature such as the roots, creepers, the patterns that nature creates — forms of waves and curves. It is the artist’s conscio us decision to connect with nature. And, the whole series is aptly called Rhythm of Nature, as it presents the undulating forms of human figures to natural formations in the environ. The sculptures are suggestive of female figure, and faces; some forms are commonly pierced or contain hollow space.

The semi-abstract works move from nature to spiritual concept encompassing human thoughts and imaginations. The artist, who is a master of fine art from Delhi’s College of Art, takes care of minute details of texture carving and colour tones. Through the exhibition, he wants to spread a message — Its not too late, we still have time to preserve nature.
