This police station in Delhi has a crèche and a souvenir shop
Earlier, women with kids might have thought twice before approaching a police station, but this will no longer be an issue for citizens of Delhi. Bringing additional facilities, the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) of Delhi Police has come up with a visitor-friendly police station in Malviya Nagar to facilitate the needs of complainants with children.
Inaugurated by Amulya Patnaik, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, the new police station boasts a canteen and a souvenir shop, too. Women are particularly happy with the initiative as the facilities will make it easier for them to approach the police station. “I’m dealing with a divorce case and have to visit the station often. I have a kid and taking him along should not be a problem now. I am happy with the arrangement,” shares a woman on the condition of anonymity. This special unit deals with a large volume of women complaints every day. “A lot of times, women visitors are accompanied with their children and relatives. In order to cater to their needs, we have come up with a reception hall-cum-kids’ playing area in the office complex,” says Esha Pandey, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), SPUWAC.
“This will make them comfortable about sharing their problems with us. The plan will create a general atmosphere of positivity,” adds Pandey. The special unit used to function from Nanak Pura area, and has been recently shifted to Malviya Nagar, recently. “Women safety is the priority of Delhi Police. Counselling and investigation related to crimes against women also hold major importance for us and in this, SPUWAC plays a very significant role,” says Patnaik. He goes on to add, “Through this initiative, we are also trying to make the conditions favourable for women complainants.”
