There was tension in the air with Delhi University having witnessed one of its most aggressive, and somewhat violent, campaigning this year for its Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.

But Friday turned out to be calm with no incidents of violence being reported from anywhere, on or off campus colleges.

An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, Sanjeev Jha, was detained at north campus and around 96 different party volunteers were detained at south campus.

Jha, an MLA from Burari constituency, was briefly detained by the police as he was found campaigning for CYSS in violation of the model code of conduct.

At Chatra Marg, near the Campus Law Centre in north Delhi, a large NSUI banner had to be torn as it contained the names of party candidates.

The overall process of polling was peaceful, with the voting percentage at morning colleges being recorded at 42 percent, a slight dip from last year’s 42.3 percent.

The evening colleges voted till 7pm. Authorities, said the voting percentage for evening colleges, which was expected to go up, saw a dip instead and couldn’t breach last year’s mark of 44.43 percent.

The total voting percentage stood at 43.3% with 1,37,552 students having cast their franchises this year.

On comparing individual colleges, the Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College recorded the highest voting percentage of 91 percent.

With the Ch atra Yuva Sangarsh Samiti (CYSS) entering the DUSU polls, it was largely estimated this year that the overall voting percentage would increase, as had happened during the Delhi assembly polls.

The result of the DUSU polls is scheduled to be declared on Saturday.
