It was a clean ABVP sweep at the college level panels on Friday, a day before the Delhi University Student’s (DUSU) election results are due to be announced.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-backed student’s wing — on Friday notched victories in 23 colleges (22 morning and one evening college).

“The ABVP has a strong volunteer base in every college. We have worked on the field. Students know us and vote for us,” said Rohit Chahal, ABVP national secretary.

Sources speculated that ABVP’s victory tally may swell further with counting in nine evening colleges yet to be completed.

Last year, the ABVP had won in 28 colleges and also swept the DUSU panel of president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary. ABVP’s 2014 clean sweep had come after a hiatus of 17 years

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) finished second on Friday and won the panels in 11 morning colleges. The colleges which NSUI won were mostly south and off campus colleges. In north campus, the NSUI managed to notch a lone victory at the Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College.

“The college level election do not always necessarily give a clear picture of the DUSU poll results. However, it is true that the victory share of our colleges has increased when compared to last year,” said Roji M John, NSUI national president.

Speculations are rife this year that ABVP might find it difficult to pull off a clean sweep DUSU polls also. The party this year is locked in a triangular fight with ABVP, NSUI and Chatra Yuva Sangarsh Samiti (CYSS), the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
