India women lose to Canada ahead of World League

The Indian women’s hockey team lost to Canada 1-3 ahead of the Women’s Hockey World League Round 2 here.

Canada struck in the eighth minute as Nikki Woodcroft scored a field goal to take a 1-0 lead. Stephanie Norlander doubled the lead in the second quarter in the 19th minute that put the hosts in the drivers seat.

At half time, Canada were comfortabl­y placed at 2-0. It was the third quarter when the visiting side pulled one back through Gurjit Kaur. Karli Johansen’s 49th minute goal sealed the fate of the game as India lost 1-3. India begin their World League Round 2 campaign on April 1 against Uruguay in their Pool A game.

KOLKATA FOR FINAL

Kolkata’s iconic Salt Lake Stadium will stage the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup on October 28, while Navi Mumbai and Guwahati have been selected to host the semi-finals of the prestigiou­s tournament which India is hosting for the first time.

Following a week-long inspection tour of the six venues chosen for the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017, and with less than 200 days to go until the footballin­g talents of the future compete on the pitch, FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) have announced the schedule.

The tournament will start in New Delhi and Navi Mumbai.

INDIA FINISH THIRD

India finished the ISSF Shotgun World Cup on third position even as the skeet shooters endured a shoot-off heartbreak in the men’s event in Acapulco, Mexico.

India finished third in the standings owing to Ankur Mittal’s gold medal in men’s double trap. On the concluding day of the competitio­ns, Angad Vir Singh Bajwa and Man Singh were involved in a six-way shoot-off for the sixth and final qualifying spot of the men’s skeet final.
