13-yr-old killed, 2 hurt as iron gate fell on them in Neb Sarai
NEW DELHI : A heavy iron gate installed at the entrance of a residential colony in South Delhi’s Neb Sarai fell on three young boys, killing one of them and injuring two others, on Wednesday afternoon.
The sharp rod of the gate pierced the 13-year-old boy, Ajay’s head, killing him on the spot. While one of Ajay’s friends, Vivek, is hospitalised with injuries to his head and limbs, another boy, Sumit, escaped with relatively minor injuries, police said.
Ajay lived with his parents in JJ Camp in Tigri area. His father is a cobbler and was away at work at the time of the accident. The other two boys are his neighbours.
The three boys were playing near the entrance of Krishna Park locality in Neb Sarai, around 100 metres from their home, on Wednesday afternoon.
Whether it was a strong wind that led to the collapse of the black gate or the children were tugging at it is yet to be probed. Eyewitnesses told police that they heard a loud thud combined with the screams of the children around 2.30 pm.
The locals joined hands to first remove Vivek who was trapped under the gate. They then pulled out the Ajay’s head from the pointed tip of the gate’s rod.
“Some people who witnessed the accident informed my wife who immediately called me to inform about it. I rushed back from work, but they had shifted my son and the two other boys to Batra Hospital,” said Ajay’s father, Raju.
Ajay, however, was declared brought dead. The other injured boy, nine-year-old Vivek, continues to be hospitalized. Police said he is expected to survive. The third victim, nine-year-old Sumit, was discharged after treatment.
Investigating the accident, police said they have been informed that the gate was installed by the Krishna Park Residents’ Welfare Association many years ago.
“Locals have alleged that the base of the gate was very weak and that they had raised the issue many times in the past, but no action was taken. We are investigating the allegations as well as the organization that had got the gate installed,” said a senior police officer.
A case of causing death by negligence and causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others has been registered at Neb Sarai police station.
