A Delhi Metro train was evacuated at Rajiv Chowk station after sparks were seen on its roof on Wednesday morning.

An official of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said that smoke and spark were noticed on a train at Rajiv Chowk at 10.17 am.

All passengers were asked to deboard due to which service on Yellow Line was disrupted for a few minutes.

As the train bound for Samaypur Badli chugged in, a spark appeared in the rear part of the train followed by a minor ‘blast’-like sound due to the electric spark.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation initially said there was a short circuit but later it said that the incident was being probed.

“Smoke reported from the AC of last coach of a Metro train at Rajiv Chowk platform heading towards Badli at 10:17am. As a precaution, the train was evacuated at the station itself and passengers accommodated in the next train. The train was sent to depot for further analysis and investigation. Train services are running normal on the line,” a DMRC spokesperson said.

Commuters took to Twitter soon after the incident and some said they heard two explosions in the train.

Rajiv Chowk is one of the busiest interchange stations in the Delhi Metro network. Normal train operations had resumed on the line by 11 am.

Platform number 1 and 2 were crowded with passengers when HT visited Rajiv Chowk metro station at 11 am. Passengers appeared unaware of any disruptions, but a Metro staffer managing the crowd said that attempts were made to evacuate the two platforms for 10-15 minutes.

“As soon as the train reached the station, I heard a small blast sound. There was another mini blast around five minutes later,” said the guard.

Another guard said that passengers were instructed to get off the train one by one. “We tried to prevent a stampede and asked all passengers to leave the platform. A few people left, but others decided to stay back and watch,” said the guard.
