NEWDELHI: The Delhi Police would hire a chief technology officer at the police headquarters to keep pace with global technology developments, lieutenant governor Anil Baijal said on Wednesday.

The appointee is expected to help the police equip itself better to meet the growing challenges.

“The appointment is being done in response to the potent threat of cyber crime and cyberattacks, more so in the environment of increasing digitalisation of services and commercial transactions. The police are also working with young technology students from various government institutions within the city,” Baijal said, delivering a keynote address at the ninth edition of homeland security programme of FICCI.

Highlighting the contextual perspective of some noticeable changes happening in the country that have a direct bearing on policing and its modernisation, Baijal outlined three such clear developments — emerging demographic profile, the pace and pattern of unabated urbanisation and the rapid pace at which the technology is developing.

Baijal also spoke about some of the initiatives launched in Delhi for more effective functioning of the police.

One of the main focus areas of policing in Delhi has been to ensure the safety and security of women, he said.

“In the process, the Delhi Police have created enforcement protocols including a mobilebased application, women help desk in each police station, community outreach (operation shishtachar), emergency helpline, anti-stalking service, involvement of NGOs, gender sensitisation, sensitisation of BPOs, fast tracking of cases, etc. A nodal unit has also been carved out within the Delhi Police named as the Special Police Unit for Women and Children,” he added.
