NEWDELHI:The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has issued show cause notice to seven defaulting officials and held back their salaries for not taking the ‘anti-mosquito drive’ seriously.

The department issued notice to the director-in-chief, department of environment management services, on Tuesday. The other six officials, including a deputy commissioner, were served notice last week.

According to EDMC commissioner Mohanjeet Singh, despite repeated orders to officials to monitor work of dengue breeding checkers (DBC) and submit reports regularly, few were obeying the instructions.

“We are minutely watching the performance of officials assigned the job of controlling the spreading of vector-borne diseases considering more cases of dengue and chikungunya are being reported this year in comparison to last year,” said Yoginder Singh Mann, spokesperson, EDMC.

Two months ago, the civic agency had formed 35 teams, each headed by department heads such as engineer in chief, chief engineer and superintending engineers. They were asked to verify the work done by DBC workers in at least two wards and submit a report every day.

“But it was found that these officials were not visiting the areas and rather sending their junior officials for inspections. In April 2017, the commissioner made it compulsory for officials to send ‘selfies’ while inspecting the areas along with DBC workers,” said Mann.

Even after that when the officials didn’t follow the orders seriously, action was against them. “The issue was discussed in weekly meetings and after that a show cause notice was issued to the director of DEMS. The official has been given three days time to clarify,” said senior official.

In the notice, it has been mentioned that despite repeated requests, the officials have not submitted daily reports to additional commissioner, health.

The EDMC commissioner has appointed official on special duty (OSD) Saranjeet Singh to verify data collected by DBC teams.
