BRACE FOR RAIN, THUNDERSTORM ON MONDAY: MET
thunderstorm, similar to the one which struck Delhi on Sunday and brought down temperatures by at least 10 degrees, could hit the city again on Monday.
Met department officials said that a western disturbance and two cyclonic circulations – one over Punjab and another over Uttar Pradesh - are expected to trigger rain and thundershower over Delhi-NCR on Monday.
“While thunderstorms and dust storms could sweep through the city on Saturday and Sunday and bring down the temperature, the peak activity is expected on Monday,” said a senior official of the regional weather forecast centre in New Delhi.
The met department predicted that winds travelling at more than 55kmph could sweep through the city on Monday, which in turn would help to bring down the temperature well below the 40 degrees Celsius mark.
“The thunderstorm will cool down the air in the high altitudes and because of the convection current this colder air mass would come down to lower levels. As a result , the mercury level is expected to plummet to around 40 degrees,” said the official.
On May 21 (Sunday), rain and thundershower accompanied with squally winds had forced the mercury to drop below 30 degrees. It was the lowest day temperature that Delhi had registered in the summer months in at least seven years.
