Najeeb case: CBI team visits JNU to probe disappearance
A team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday started probe into the disappearance of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed by visiting the varsity campus on Monday.
Najeeb, a biotechnology student at JNU, had gone missing from his hostel on October 16, 2016, after allegedly being beaten up by student members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a body affiliated to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The case, previously probed by Delhi Police, was taken over by the CBI on the direction of the Delhi high court and an FIR was registered in the matter against unknown persons earlier this month.
The team of investigators that visited JNU spent a major portion of their time at university’s Mahi-Mandvi hostel where Najeeb had been staying. It was in this hostel that the alleged scuffle between Najeeb and ABVP members took place.
Sources in CBI said investigators wanted to recreate the sequence of events which led to the disappearance of Najeeb. “This was not a search, neither was it a raid. CBI wanted to examine the spot where the alleged scuffle took place. Investigators interacted with several individuals and will proceed further based on their findings of the day,” said a CBI official.
Officials also said that Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees recently met CBI officers investigating the case and gave details of the events before her son disappeared from his hostel.
