NEWDELHI: Four men who posed as policemen carrying wireless sets have been arrested for duping over three dozen persons of their cash, mobile phones and other valuables.

One China-made wireless set and two sedans are among several items seized from them, said police on Tuesday. The suspects allegedly played a recorded message on the wireless set.Police said the gang is suspected to be involved in 40 such crimes.

On June 11, one of the victims, Dinesh Kumar, was waiting at a bus stop on west Delhi’s Pankha Road for a transport to Anand Vihar railway station.

A man befriended him saying he too was going to the railway station. Soon, a man driving a Swift Dzire car stopped by.

The driver offered to drop them to the station. Once they were in the car, the driver and Kumar’s friend claimed they were policemen. A message on the wireless set being carried by Kumar’s co-passenger said that a red car had zoomed ahead despite being flagged down by police at a picket. The driver said he needed to verify Kumar’s identity and asked him to show his belongings. Kumar not only handed over his mobile phone, wallet, debit cards and other valuables, he also shared the PIN number of those cards.

Kumar was dropped at an isolated spot and the fraudsters fled. They withdrew ₹80,000 from Kumar’s ATM cards and used them for shopping. The police got a tip-off and arrested four of them from DESU Colony in Janakpuri.
