NEW DELHI: A Guinea Bissau national managed to sneak out of the Delhi airport after he was detained by immigration officials for not having a visa.

The passenger, who arrived via Ethiopian airline flight ET 686, approached the immigration counter with his passport.

“He approached the e-visa counter but was told that Guinea Bissau was not authorised for an e-visa facility. In his visa application, he had shown his nationality as Guinea instead, which is in the list of countries eligible for e-visa. He got the e-visa by giving wrong information but was caught by the immigration,” said a Delhi police officer.

The man was taken to the deportation room to complete the formalities but there he changed his clothes and fled.

“He ran away towards exit area and could not be located after that. We are scanning CCTV footage to check his movement. He left his passport and luggage at the immigration counter,” the officer said.

The passenger had filled a disembarkation card and had given address and phone number.

“We are probing the details we have got through his disembarkation card. He is living without any valid document in India. His photo is available with us and we informed police of other districts,” the officer said.

A case of cheating, under section 420 of Indian Penal code has been registered at the airport police station.

Immigration officials said that have been receiving many complaints about e-visas. The Delhi Police have come to know about a fake website issuing India visa to foreigners and taking payment.

Five foreigners have been deported from the Delhi airport within a month and in every case, the same website had duped the travellers and took around $200 from them.

The first case was detected on April 21, when three US Nationals arrived from UAE with e-visa.

But scrutiny by the immigration revealed that it was issued in the name of some other passengers. Indianvisaonline.gov.in is the portal run by the MHA to provide online visa to foreigners.
