Waterlogging due to blocked PWD drains: Councillors
NEW DELHI: A day after the Delhi High Court rapped the Public Works Department (PWD) and warned them of being penalised if they failed to clean the six kilometre-long Kushak drain within three days, the issue was discussed in the house meeting on Wednesday.
Ramesh, leader of opposition placed a short notice in the house over the status of desilting PWD drains in south Delhi, if this is causing waterlogging on roads. A number of meetings had taken place between officials of PWD and South Corporation on this.
Ramesh also pointed out the damage caused to SDMC roads due to waterlogging and the steps taken by the civic body to repair them. In reply, he was informed that temporary repair work is being carried out simultaneously, but the estimate of dense-carpeting will be done after the rains.
However, the BJP councillors strongly condemned the Delhi government’s PWD for not cleaning the drains at all, which resuled in waterlogging in the city during rains.
“Despite completing the desilting work on time, complaints of waterlogging are being received from residential areas because the main drains belonging to PWD are still not cleaned. And the department itself has accepted the fact. Unfortunately, the court had to intervene in the matter of cleaning Kushak Nullah and other drains as well,” said Shikha Roy, leader of house, SDMC.
