NEW DELHI A day after the Delhi government’s decision to reject the north corporation’s file to notify boundaries of its zones, the latter has decided to take the matter to court.

The Delhi government on Tuesday gave the go-ahead to the south and east corporation to form the zones. But it rejected the north corporation’s proposal to form a new zone named Keshavpuram (from Civil Lines, Narela and Rohini zones) and culmination the Sadar Paharganj and city zones on the grounds that it was not ‘legally tenable’.

Miffed with the decision, mayor Preety Agarwal and commissioner Praveen Gupta met the lieutenant Governor on Wednesday, seeking his intervention regarding clearance of the file.

According to Agarwal, the L-G was convinced with the proposal as it was in the interest of citizens and sent the file back to the Delhi government.

“The proposal to notify boundaries of zones has been rejected on flimsy grounds, saying it would confuse citizens. But that fact is that residents have nothing to do with this process of forming new zones. If a file regarding notification of zone boundaries is not cleared in one week, we will take the matter to the high court,” said Agarwal.

The Delhi government’s decision to reject the file is politically motivated and deprives people of Delhi from civic and infrastructure facilities, she said.

“The new house was constituted more than two months ago but still it is not possible to clear the projects for buying new cleaning machines and hospital equipment. For smooth functioning of the deliberative wing, it is essential to have the statutory committees (such as standing and zonal committees) in place,” she said.

The North MCD official said that the decision would help to bring all wards in one assembly constituency under one zone.

A Delhi government official said the north corporation’s file was rejected as it was not in conformity with the rules and regulation under the Delhi Municipal Act. “The proposal to form a new zone is not legally tenable, that’s why we rejected the file and shared the details with the civic agency as well,” said an official.

“They (North DMC) are free to choose any medium for expressing their point of view,” said the official on the North MCD’s mayor decision to take the matter to court if no decision is taken in a month.

The official confirmed the appointment of eldermen in the three civic agencies. “The L-G approved the proposal and a list of 30 eldermen (10 for South, East and North Corporation) was notified today,” he said.
