Hit-and-run: Traffic cop hit by truck, dies
A 30-year-old Delhi traffic police constable died after a speeding truck knocked him down on the Geeta Colony flyover on Saturday morning.
The constable, Binesh Kumar, was trying to stop the truck after it overtook another vehicle in a rash manner. The truck ran over the constable as he signalled its driver to stop. Kumar died around 11.30 am at a private hospital in east Delhi. The driver fled with the vehicle even though other traffic police personnel chased it.
Harendra Kumar Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police (North), said the constable was a native of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. He is survived by his wife and three-and-a-half-yearold daughter. Kumar joined Delhi Police in 2010 and was posted in Kotwali traffic circle.
According to Singh, Kumar and three other traffic personnel were manning a check post near the Geeta Colony flyover when the accident took place. The traffic policemen were standing on the roadside when they spotted a green truck, probably carrying bricks, coming from ITO.
“The truck was in speed and overtook another vehicle. Kumar went on the road, signalling the trucker to stop. But the trucker pressed the accelerator in his attempt to jump the check post,” said a traffic police officer.
Kumar came in the way of the truck and was hit. He was thrown in the air, his head hit the road and he fell unconscious. One of his colleagues rushed to his help, while the others started chasing the truck. “Kumar was rushed to Sushruta Trauma Centre from where he was shifted to a private hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries,” said the officer.
Police registered a case under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 186 (obstructing a public servant), 353 (assault to deter a public servant) 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering personal safety of others) of the IPC and 50/177, 66.1/192A of the motor vehicle act.
