NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will build three multilevel parking lots near Humayun’s Tomb and Nizamuddin Dargah to decongest the area.

The move came after Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal inspected the area on Saturday morning. He directed SDMC commissioner Puneet Goel and senior officials of the Delhi government to resolve the traffic congestion and parking issues in the area.

Mathura Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and Lodhi road witness heavy traffic movement every day, which is further increased by visitors to the Nizamuddi Dargah and Humayun’s Tomb, especially on weekends and Thursday. “SDMC commissioner pointed out potential sites for creating multilevel parking spots for visitors to the Nizamuddin area. The corporation has been given three weeks to prepare the plan,” said a statement issued by the L-G office.

One of the parking sites will also facilitate to visitors coming to Lodhi Road crematorium. “Sometimes, number of visitors coming to crematorium are higher and they leave their cars on the pavement, which leads to traffic jams on Lala Lajpat Rai Marg,” said an official of SDMC.

During the inspection, Goel also sought the L-G’s intervention to make arrangements for parking at Sunehri Nallah for 100 buses ferrying pilgrims coming to Nizamuddin to attend annal Urs.

“The L-G instructed to hold inter-departmental co-ordination meetings to look for solutions. He also asked for options to be explored for creation of additional facilities such as shelters, toilets, and cooking areas. This should preferably be done by December 31, 2017, to allow use of parking during Urs festival in January 2018,” said an official.
