No unlicensed rickshaws to ply in Chandni Chowk

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has started a crackdown on illegal rickshaws to decongest Chandni Chowk.

An official said many illegal rickshaws ply on the roads of Chandni Chowk and cause frequent traffic jams.

“They park haphazardly anywhere on the road sides. It is important to organise them and ensure these are parked properly at authorised places. But that would be possible only when these rickshaws are registered and have licences,” said Yoginder Sing Mann, spokesperson, North DMC.

The civic agency has asked rickshaw owners to get them registered with the corporation. “We are telling them the benefits of acquiring a licence. In the last 20 days, 250 rickshaw pullers in the area availed of the facility and got themselves registered. They have been asked to fix laminated copies of licences at the back of rickshaws. This would help us identify unregistered rickshaws,” said Mann.

The North DMC is charging a licence fee of ₹710 and it would be valid for five years. The step has been taken after a meeting of North DMC officials with Delhi Police on October 6.

“But we face problems in case of rickshaws with multiple owners. There are instances of one person owning a fleet of rickshaws and giving them out on rent. It is difficult to chase the owner,” said another North DMC official.

The civic agency is pasting warning stickers on cars, autos and vehicles found parked illegally. “This is a kind of warning we give to the offenders for not parking on public land. Those who won’t abide the norms face strick action. We collected an amount of ₹9 lakh as penalty from such defaulters in last one week,” said official.
