NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation constituted a committee on Monday to look into the demolition in Jasola village leading to flooding in the houses in the neighbourhood.

The direction was issued by the SDMC mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat after a house was demolished by the corporation on Friday and its debris fell into adjoining drain and blocked its flow. This lead to backflow in houses in the neighbourhood for days.

“On November 10, a five-storey illegal building was demolished by SDMC officials after complaints about tilting of the structure. As soon as the civic agency razed the structure, its debris fell into the adjoining drains, blocking its outflow, said Sehrawat.

To verify the facts and whether all the safety measures were adopted while carrying the demolition drive, a committee has been constituted after a discussion between Sehrawat and SDMC commissioner Puneet Goel.

Leader of House Shikha Rai, who will be heading the committee has been asked to ascertain the facts, fix the responsibility and submit report within five days.

However, officials maintained that the drive was carried with all safety arrangements. “It is such a congested area that it was impossible to take the machines inside. We managed to take a bulldozer and raised the building carefully. The SDMC workers are also deployed to remove the debris from drain, running parallel to structure and we are hoping things will be normalise by Saturday,” said senior SDMC Official.
