Android Oreo features to make you more productive

- Abhijit.a@htlive.com n

If your smartphone is in line to get the Android Oreo update, here are some of the features of the new OS which can help you at work . The latest version of Google’s mobile OS, called Android 8.1 or Android Oreo, is finally out in the market. It comes preloaded on Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL and Sony Xperia XZ1, while users with a Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL can get it through an OTA update. Other OEMs such as HTC, LG, Nokia and Motorola have already announced the name of smartphones that will be updated to the new OS.

Oreo offers a number of exciting new features, and many of these can come in handy for users who depend on their smartphone for work.

Improved multitasking

Google is improving the side-byside by multi-tasking feature of Android Nougat with an even better Picture in Picture mode in Android Oreo. It allows users to keep two apps open side by side and even adjust the size and location of the app window on the screen. So if you are carrying out a group chat with your team and want to take notes, simultaneously, you can reduce the size of chat window, drag it to one corner of the screen and open and type on the note app on the rest of the screen. The apps should be compatible with the feature to take advantage of it.

Making copy pasting easier

With Android Oreo, copying and pasting text or number will become a lot easier.

In older versions of Android, users have to tap and select the entire text or number to copy them. Now users can select an entire word or mobile number by double tapping on any of the letters or digits.

The feature also interlinks several Google apps. So if a user taps on an email to copy, they will get the option to open the Gmail app with a single tap.

More control over notifications

Notifications in Android Oreo will be a lot more interactive and organised. Now users can club all notifications from similar set of apps together.

Users can also snooze notifications in case they are too busy to check them at the time they received it first. The notifications will show up after some time chosen by the user.

Making room on low storage devices

If your Android smartphone is low on storage you don’t have to free it up manually. Android Oreo has a new feature called Smart Storage which automatically deletes images and video files which have been backed up on Google Drive after 30 days. To enable this feature, go to Settings->Storage-> and switch on Smart storage.

Protecting against risky apps

To protecting users against PHAs (potentially harmful apps) from third party stores, Google has replaced the runtime permission feature with a new permission system.

It blocks installation of apps without your permission even if the setting to download apps from unknown sources is enabled. Also, it will warn users if an app downloaded through a browser is trying to install an update.
