NEW DELHI: A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death, allegedly by his schoolmates, outside a government school in north-east Delhi’s Gautampuri on Wednesday evening, police said.

Devender Arya, the acting DCP (northeast), said initial probe has suggested the involvement of the boy’s school friends but police are yet to apprehend anyone.

“The teenager had a fight with a group of boys outside the school before he was stabbed. We are yet to find the reason behind the clash,” said Arya.

Another officer, not authorized to speak to the media, said the victim’s classmates said he was earlier involved in a quarrel over seating arrangements inside the school. But it is yet to be confirmed if that had anything to do with the murder, the officer said.

The teenager lived with his parents in Gautampuri, not far from the government school where he studied in class nine. His father runs a small business.

The murder happened at a street outside the boy’s house around 6.30 pm on Wednesday, barely 50 metres from the school. Police said he had left school after classes when he was allegedly confronted by the group of boys. What exactly transpired remains unclear, but locals rushed to the spot on hearing his cries for help.

“He was stabbed in the ribs. When locals reached the spot, the attackers ran away. They could not be caught. The boy was rushed to a hospital, but he bled to death,” said an officer.

A murder case has been registered at Gokalpuri police station. Police continued to question the victim’s classmates and teachers, but none of the suspects were apprehended till late Wednesday night. Police are scanning CCTV footage of the neighbourhood to establish the identity of the killers, said police.
