NEWDELHI: A 23-year-old man was killed and seven others injured when an MUV crashed into a stationary truck on Chirag Dilli flyover on Saturday.

The deceased, Umar Sayed, worked as a credit risk analyst in a business process management company in Gurgaon and was staying in a rented accommodation in Jamia Nagar.

Sayed and six of his colleagues, along with the driver, were heading towards Jamia Nagar from their office in office cab to drop Sayed to his home. The accident took place around 4.30 am, police said. “Prima facie, the driver of the Tata Sumo car collided with the truck which was parked on the roadside. Immediately after the accident, a police team reached there and rushed the injured to a hospital. Sayed was declared brought dead while all others are receiving treatment,” said additional deputy commissioner of police (south) Vijayanta Arya.

The truck driver is on the run. The truck was stationary as it had run out of fuel, said the officer adding that the vehicle was later towed away to the police station. It was carrying construction material and has a Rajasthan registered number plate, said the police.

Sayed’s brother Anas said the cab driver, Vashishtha Kumar, who is among the seven injured, was allegedly driving at a high speed, which is why the accident took place. An investigator said they will probe if the MUV driver’s speeding was also responsible for the accident. Vashishta, however, was not found to be drunk according to medical reports.

“A case has been registered under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash and negligent driving) of the IPC against the absconding truck driver,” said Arya. All the seven injured are currently out of danger. Sayed hailed from UP. “He joined the company few months ago and was expecting a promotion,” said Anas.
