Prepared to meet 7,000 MW power demand this year, say discoms
NEW DELHI: As the peak power demand in Delhi is expected to touch 7,000 MW this summer, the city’s private distribution companies on Monday said they have made “enough” arrangements to meet the city’s electricity requirement this year.
In south and west Delhi areas, discom BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) said that the peak demand is expected to cross 2,880 MW this summer, while the demand may reach 1,670 MW in east and central Delhi under the BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL). In north and northwest Delhi, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has estimated a peak electricity demand of about 2,000 MW this season against last year’s 1,852 MW during summers.
“Arrangements firmed up by BRPL and BYPL to source adequate electricity include longterm power purchase agreements (PPAs) and banking arrangements with states including Himachal Pradesh (425 MW), Uttar Pradesh (72 MW), Andhra Pradesh (50 MW), Sikkim (50 MW), Tamil Nadu (25 MW) and Bhutan (40 MW),” the BSES said in a statement.
Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD of TPDDL, said the discom has made long-term tie-ups amounting to around 2,000 MW and other arrangements up to 300 MW, through power import banking with other states to ensure regular supply and to take care of any contingency requirements.
At 6,526 MW, the peak power demand last summer was the highest ever recorded. In case of unforeseen contingencies, the discoms said they will purchase short-term power.
