GHAZIABAD: Armed robbers allegedly in police uniform fled with nearly 10kg gold jewellery after allegedly waylaying the car of Mumbai-based jewellery firm’s employees in Sahibabad on Sunday night, police said.

Two employees of Union Chains and Jewellers Pvt Ltd headquartered in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar — Rahul Jain and Krishna — and their acquaintance in Delhi, Deepak, had gone to Meerut in a hired car on account of business.

The three, along with their driver Ramashish, started from Meerut for Delhi around 8pm on Sunday and reached Sahibabad around 10.30pm when the robbers allegedly waylaid them a kilometre away from Sahibabad police station, police said.

Two of the four robbers were allegedly in police uniforms and asked the car’s occupants for documents of the car.

Two robbers allegedly thrashed the men inside the car and took the two bags containing the gold. Jain was pulled out of the car and taken in another car to Sikandarpur near Hindon airbase. They also threatened Jain that if he resisted, they will kill him, police said.

“The robbers left behind a police cap in the victims’ car,” said Akash Tomar, superintendent of police, Ghaziabad.

The victims later approached Sahibabad police around 2am. An FIR for causing hurt during robbery and criminal intimidation was lodged against unidentified men at Sahibabad police station.

Jain and Krishna had boarded Rajdhani Express from Mumbai to New Delhi on March 17.

The next day they checked in a hotel at Chandni Chowk which, the police said, was arranged by their business acquaintance who sent Deepak with them in a hired car to Meerut around 11am.

Jain could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

However, when contacted, an official on behalf of the jewellery company said,“The two employees had gone to Meerut with gold chains and jewellery weighing nearly 10kg The gold was of 18 carats and 22 carats. How much of this is taken away by robbers needs to be verified.”

“The men were beaten and are not in a proper state of mind right now. Our senior officials have gone to Ghaziabad. We have given all the details of GST, income tax and voucher details to police. The matter is under investigation by police,” said the internal auditor of the company, without revealing his name.

The robbers, armed with pistols, targeted only the two bags carried by the employees while their money, mobile phones and other valuables were not taken. Police on Monday evening said that the victims were allegedly followed as the robbers may have had some information about the gold being carried in the car.

“The source is suspected to be external but we are verifying if any internal source leaked information about gold. The car used by robbers was Alto,” said a police officer.

“We have got information about four suspects. There are leads from the CCTV and electronic surveillance methods. The case will be cracked soon,” Tomar said.
