Delegation of domestic workers to meet DC

-

GURUGRAM: Two days after a case of assault involving a domestic help was reported from an upscale condominium on the Golf Course Road, domestic workers from across the city met at Chakkarpur village on Saturday and decided to meet the Gurugram deputy commissioner to get their problems resolved.

The 300 men and women from Chakkarpur, Badshahpur, Tigra village, Ghata, Nathupura, Wazirabad, Saraswati Kunj, Harijan Colony, Neem Talla and areas from across the highway, gathered in Chakkarpur. They discussed the issues they face at workplace on a day-to-day basis and reiterated their commitment to unite and fight against exploitation. They also marked International Domestic Workers’ Day, which was observed on Saturday.

“The workers who gathered at the meeting shared their experiences of their work conditions and the abusive way in which they are usually treated by the employers. They also emphasised the apathy which the police and the district administration have towards their plight,” said Maya John, convener of Gharelu Kaamgar Union.

“There is no regulation from the government’s side to ensure that the plight of domestic workers improves,” she said.

The domestic workers also said they would gherao the DC office, if the administration does not listen to their demands.

On Thursday, a domestic worker and her employer were arrested for allegedly assaulting each other over food. They were later released on bail.
