SPMC to begin Geography (H) this year

NEW DELHI: Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College (SPMC) for Women is admitting students to a Geography (Honours) programme beginning this academic year.

While the SPMC had received permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2015, it had been unable to introduce the degree until now due to logistical constraints.

The college is offering 46 seats for the programme, complying with the DU reservation guidelines.

Students can apply through the DU’s centralised application procedure.

As of now, there is one permanent and two ad hoc faculty to teach the course. The department will be headed by Rachna Dua, associate professor of geography.

“The college will have all required faculty by the commencement of the semester,” said Sadhana Sharma, principal of the college.

The college is located in Punjabi Bagh and is accessible by the Shivaji Park Metro station on the Green Line or the Punjabi Bagh Metro station on the Pink Line.

BA (Hons) in Geography was the 11th most popular course choice amongst applicants this year.

DU has received 75,434 applications for the course.

Last year, the cutoffs for the course ranged from 84% to 97.5%.

Geography as a subject is sought after most by UPSC aspirants, according to college officials.

“Geography is a modern subject. Its applications and uses span across other disciplines like economics, life sciences and anthropology. It is also one of the highest preferred subjects by students wanting to enter into the civil services,” said Sharma.
