2 cars snatched at gunpoint in a day

GURUGRAM:Three armed robbers allegedly snatched a Baleno hatchback from a 28-year-old man near Leisure Inn in West Gurugram on the old Delhi-Gurgaon Road on Saturday night.

Police said the incident took place at 10pm when the victim, Sidharth Mandal, who works and lives in Delhi, was waiting to meet an acquaintan­ce.

“One of the accused knocked on the car’s window and asked Mandal for directions to Sector 14. Two other accomplice­s came from the other side and pointed a gun at him. They got into the vehicle and forced Mandal out of the car on Pataudi Road before going towards Jaipur,” said ASI Trilok Chand.

In another case, an Ertiga car was allegedly snatched by three persons from a driver near MG Road Metro station. Police said the accused asked the driver for a lift. “After getting into the car, they held the driver at gunpoint and assaulted him. The driver jumped out of the moving car and later filed a complaint,” said inspector Guarav Phogat, DLF Phase-2 .

GURUGRAM: Two cases of carjacking were reported in the city on Saturday.

In the first incident, three armed robbers allegedly snatched a Baleno hatchback from a 28-year-old man near Leisure Inn in West Gurugram, barely 200 metres from a police station, on the old Delhi-Gurgaon road on Saturday night.

According to the police, the incident took place at 10pm when the victim, Sidharth Mandal, a native of Uttarakhan­d who works and lives in Delhi, had parked his car across the road near a marriage venue and was waiting to meet an acquaintan­ce.

The investigat­ing officer, ASI Trilok Chand, said, “One of the accused knocked on the car’s window pane and asked the

driver for directions to Sector 14. At the same time, two other accomplice­s came from the other side and pointed a gun at the complainan­t. The trio got into the vehicle with Mandal and drove around for 20 minutes. They dropped the complainan­t on Pataudi Road and drove towards Jaipur on NH-8.”

Police said the accused also took the victim’s mobile phone and a wallet, containing ₹10,000 in cash, ATM cards and driving licence.

In the complaint submitted to the police, Mandal has alleged that the accused took him hostage and also beat him up.

Chand said that the incident could not be captured on any CCTV camera near the spot. A case has been registered against unidentifi­ed accused under IPC sections 379-B (punishment for snatching with hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtheranc­e of common intention) and sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act at the Sector 14 police station.

In the second case, an Ertiga car was allegedly snatched by three persons, including two women, from a driver near MG Road Metro station on Saturday night.

According to the police, the accused asked the driver for a lift. “After getting into the vehicle, the accused snatched the car at gunpoint and allegedly assaulted the driver. The driver jumped out of the moving car and later, informed the police. On the basis of a complaint filed by driver, Ghanshyam, a case was registered and three suspects were rounded up late Sunday evening,” said inspector Guarav Phogat, DLF Phase-2 station house officer.

Motor vehicle thefts are rampant in Gurugram. Till April 30, 2018, 1,558 cases of carjacking were reported in Gurugram, and the police were able to track only 107 vehicles. In 2017, 4,242 vehicles were stolen, but only 107 vehicles could be recovered.

Neighbourh­oods under Sadar, Sohna Road, Sector 14, Sector 29 and DLF Phase-2 police stations are most vulnerable to vehicle theft.
