4 borewells to resolve Sushant Lok water crisis
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is all set to revive four old bore wells to extract ground water and fulfil the needs of the sprawling residential township of Sushant Lok Phase 1, which continues to face an acute water crisis, even 35 years after its establishment.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority(GMDA) is the master canal-water supplier of the city.
However, the water supplied by the GMDA is not sufficient for the colony. As a result, the residents often hire tankers to fulfil their needs.
Gopal Kalawat, executive engineer, MCG, said, “Four bore wells are good enough to make up for the shortfall. We get adequate water from the GMDA , but in case for some reason there is a short supply of canal water, we can use the water from borewells. ”
Digging new bore wells in the city is prohibited by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA). Only the MCG and other government agencies can revive old borewells or go deep digging into the same place with permission from the deputy commissioner’s office.
Chief hydrologist of Gurugram, Birender Lamba. said, “Water extracted through the borewells would be used for drinking at Sushant Lok. The administration has to provide adequate water to residents of the colony. In case, canal water is not adequate, borewells are an available option. ”
Earlier, there were 21 borewells in Sushant Lok , of which 15 borewells have dried up in the past two decades with groundwater level going down from 250 feet to over 500 feet.
Six bore wells are presently functional, which the MCG uses for groundwater extraction from time to time.
Vishnu Khanna, a resident, said, “We are not in favour of groundwater extraction at all. We need water and it is the responsibility of the GMDA, and the municipal corporation to provide us with water.’
