HYDERABAD: A gas leaked from a tank at a chemical factory in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam district on Tuesday left two people dead, officials said.
This was the third such incident in Andhra Pradesh since May 7 when styrene gas leaked from Visakhapatnam’s LG Polymers plant and killed 12 people. A general manager died at Nandyal in Kurnool district on June 26 when ammonia gas leaked from a storage tank at the premises of SPY Agro Industries.
The gas leak on Tuesday was reported from the Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada, on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam police commissioner R K Meena said the chemical factory has been sealed and a case has been registered against its management. “There would be no impact of the gas leak on the surrounding areas, as it is not a very lethal gas and has not spread,” he said.
The two people who died were identified as a shift in-charge, Ravi Narendra, and chemist Gowri Shankar. Four others, Chandrasekhar, Ananda Babu, Janaki Ram, and Suryanarayana, fell sick and were hospitalised following the leak. All of them are on ventilator support, the police said.
Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy said he has instructed officials to provide the best possible treatment to the four hospitalised people.
Opposition Telugu Desam Party secretary Lokesh Nara sought a thorough probe into the industrial accidents.
