SANGRUR: Nearly half-a-dozen policemen were injured at Malerkotla on Monday when they tried to stop a mob out to torch some roadside kiosks. The anger was triggered by the killing of a Jamalpur locality youth Tanbir, 25 on Sunday.

When the cops tried to stop the protesters, they started hurling stones at them. The injured cops are undergoing treatment, said sources. No case had been registered against anyone till filing of this report.

Sources said Tanbir was shot at on Sunday allegedly by one Ajmal. He was rushed to Rajendra Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The attack on Tanbir is said to be an outcome of a group rivalry.

The protesters accused police of inaction and said it has failed to arrest Ajmal, who is absconding. Polcie said it has registered a murder case against Ajmal. The protesters on Sunday had blocked the LudhianaMalerkotla road at Jerg Chowk. The situation remains tense in Malerkotla.
